FAQ

How many lines can I locate?

    FamilyMap can locate up to 10 lines under the same wireless account. Each line requires a unique 10-digit mobile phone number. FamilyMap locates the phone/device associated with the 10-digit mobile number.

What types of devices can be located by FamilyMap?

    FamilyMap can locate devices that have a SIM card and 10-digit phone number. This includes iPhone® and Android™ devices, select Android smartwatches, and most feature phones. In addition, the device to be located must have text messaging capability so that it can receive the Welcome message from FamilyMap.

Can AT&T FamilyMap locate all AT&T phones?

    Most smartphones and basic phones can be located with AT&T FamilyMap. However, prepaid and GoPhone® services are not supported.

    Locating an iPhone? To improve location accuracy, every family member that uses an iPhone should download the AT&T FamilyMap app from App Store, register the app, and keep it running in the background.

    Note: If the family member you are locating has an Assisted GPS (A-GPS) device and is also subscribed to AT&T Smart Limits for Wireless™, there are times that the system will need to use alternative location technology to locate the device and will return a location with an accuracy of a few hundred yards or more. This will occur if the family member has reached their browsing limit or is in a time-of-day restriction at the same time of day you are locating them.

Do my family members know when I locate them?

    For security reasons, phones receive a text message from AT&T FamilyMap when they become locatable. Also, locatable phones receive notifications via text message that they can be located. These messages are received about once every two months.

    Subscribers can choose to notify a phone every time it is located, instead of receiving regular notifications. To manage your preferences, choose Family Notifications from the Manage Account screen.

Does the phone/device need to be turned on to be located?

    Yes, the phone must be turned on and in AT&T network coverage to be located. When a phone first becomes locatable, it receives a text message saying that it can be located by AT&T FamilyMap.

Can AT&T FamilyMap locate a lost or stolen phone?

    Yes! Sign up for a FamilyMap account to locate a lost or stolen phone.

    Note: The phone must be turned on and in AT&T network coverage to be located. The location will be approximate, and will not be accurate enough to find a lost phone in a specific room in a house. When a phone becomes locatable, it receives a text message saying that it can be located by AT&T FamilyMap.

Are Windows Phones and Blackberry Phones supported?

    AT&T FamilyMap currently supports Windows Phones 8.1 or higher and Blackberry phones but is planning to phase out FamilyMap support for locating phones using these platforms by June 2017. More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the date when service for these platforms will be discontinued. AT&T FamilyMap uses a number of techniques to determine a phone's location. AT&T phones that have Assisted GPS (A-GPS) return the most accurate locations when they have a clear line of sight to GPS satellites. For phones where A-GPS is not available, FamilyMap uses cell tower information to provide the most accurate location possible, which is usually within a few hundred yards to a few miles of the phone's actual location. This includes non A-GPS phones, as well as A-GPS phones that are not in a clear line of sight to GPS satellites.
